Weather Watch: No Jan. 31 Activities

We are closely monitoring the next round of winter weather expected this weekend for our area. Based on the forecast and after consulting with local emergency teams, all extra-curricular activities for Saturday, Jan. 31, have been canceled.

Any decision concerning our Monday school schedule will be shared with families no later than Sunday evening through email/text messages, our websites, social media, and local media stations. If you are not receiving our direct messages, please check your contact information in the Parent Portal.

BCSS BOE Votes on FY2026 Millage Rate and SRO Funding

Graphic announcing a July 24 Called Meeting Update from Barrow County School System.The July 24th Barrow County School System (BCSS) Board of Education Meeting ended with important votes concerning the millage rate and school safety funding.

 

MILLAGE RATE VOTE

Although the Board had advertised a rate of 15.695 for the millage hearings, members voted to lower the millage rate to the rollback number for Fiscal Year 2026 to 15.193. Last year's millage rate was 15.5.

Members spoke about the importance of being good stewards of taxpayer dollars and requested a freeze on vacant staff positions to make lowering the millage rate possible. 

"I am proud of the leadership our Board of Education continues to demonstrate by balancing the needs of our students with our commitment to fiscal responsibility," said BCSS Superintendent Dr. Dallas LeDuff. 

 

SRO PROGRAM DISCUSSION & VOTE

The Board of Education said they are committed to funding the salaries and benefits of the 24 approved School Resource Officer (SRO) positions, but would like more discussion on the indirect costs related to the SRO program. 

During the meeting, Barrow County Tax Commissioner Jessica Garrett answered questions concerning senior tax exemptions and Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith gave insight concerning costs related to the SRO program.

After having their questions answered, the Board of Education authorized 100% reimbursement of all salaries and benefits for all SROs beginning with the 2025-26 school year.

"Ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment is essential for academic success and peace of mind for families. That is why we have been committed to building the SRO program with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office. Their presence is a proactive step toward strengthening the safety and security of our schools while also fostering positive relationships between students and law enforcement," said Board Member Dr. Darlene Carey (District 6). 

"I'd like to thank Sheriff Smith and Jessica Garrett for being here to answer questions for us. Having a clear understanding of the financial impact of this vital resource is imperative to us making the best decision for our community," said Board Chair Lisa Maloof (District 3). “It is the desire of this Board to work actively and transparently with all elected officials in our county as we all represent the same citizens.”
