Yes I Can

Yes I Can Program

Each year, the Barrow County School System hosts the Yes I Can! Awards Ceremony to recognize outstanding special education students. The Yes I Can! Awards have been named, “The Best Thing Barrow Does!” It has been an integral part of our special education program for the past 14 years! This awards ceremony is modeled after the Council for Exceptional Children’s (CEC) awards ceremony that is presented annually at their Convention and Expo.

This is a huge undertaking and requires extensive planning, coordination, communication and collaboration from a team of people including special education administrators, special education teachers, paraprofessionals, principals, etc who are invested in highlighting our students with disabilities.

This year marks the 15th Annual Yes I Can! Awards celebration graciously hosted by our premier sponsor, Chateau Elan. We are very grateful for all of our sponsors who help make this banquet and awards ceremony as wonderful as it is each year. If you are interested in donating to this event, please contact Dabney Cannon at dabney.cannon@barrow.k12.ga.us.

  • My first teaching position was in the self-contained behavior classroom at Winder-Barrow High School in 2000, and I’ve been with Barrow County School System ever since! I worked as a co-teacher in social studies and taught small group classes for ELA, math, and study skills. After this, I was the reading enrichment teacher for eight years in the small group setting. In 2012, I moved to the special education department chair role at WBHS, then in 2015 I became a district special education coordinator at the PDC supporting the high schools and transition. In 2019, I moved to the Assistant Director of Special Education role, supporting all levels and programs, with a focus on secondary education and transition.
