BOLD ALUMNI: JOSH ATEN

Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy (BASA) alumni Josh Aten, a proud member of the Class of 2023, credits much of his success to the teachers and experiences that shaped his high school years. Today, as the owner of his own landscaping company, Evergreen Outdoor Service, Josh is not only building a thriving business—he’s giving back to the school that helped launch his dreams.
“I want to give back to those who poured into me during my time in school,” Josh shared when reflecting on the teachers who inspired him. Throughout his time at BASA, he had several influential educators who consistently encouraged him, challenged him, and pushed him to become the best version of himself.
“I had several teachers that pushed and encouraged me to follow my dreams of developing my own business,” he said.
Josh’s ambition to become an entrepreneur took root long before graduation. At just twelve years old, he began mowing lawns for neighbors and family members during the summer. What started as a small side job grew into a steady passion. By the time he was sixteen and a student in the Barrow County School System, Josh had officially started his own landscaping business.
Upon graduating, he made the leap into full‑time entrepreneurship—transforming his passion into a professional venture now known as Evergreen Outdoor Service.
Josh attributes much of his confidence and ability to dream big to his experience at BASA.
“Being a student at BASA taught me to dream and how to turn it into reality,” he explained.
His connection to the school remains strong. Today, Evergreen Outdoor Service is proudly registered as a Partner in Education with BASA—one of the ways Josh chooses to give back to the community that supported him.
“I want to give back to BASA because of what they gave me during my time here as a student. The experience was amazing, so I want to be able to give back.”
Before attending BASA, Josh took classes at Sims Academy through Winder-Barrow High School (WBHS). While spending time on the BASA campus, he quickly noticed the environment, community, and creative energy that stood out to him. Impressed by what he saw, he made the decision to transfer to BASA in the 10th grade—a move that would define the rest of his high school experience. One of his favorite classes was film, where he discovered a deeper appreciation for storytelling and creativity.
Looking back, Josh’s message to current students is simple but powerful:
“Keep pushing when you don’t feel like it. Believe in yourself and push forward.”
From a middle schooler with a lawn mower to a young business owner partnering with his alma mater, Josh’s story is a reminder that dreams can grow from small beginnings—and with the right support, determination, and community, they can flourish into something remarkable.
