REACH Georgia scholars, Morgan W. and Jeanna P., both rising seniors at Winder-Barrow High School went on a REACH-sponsored college visit at the University of North Georgia on April 11. REACH stands for Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen and is a State of Georgia mentorship and college scholarship program.
As part of the college visit, they met with representatives from admissions, financial aid, and UNG’s First Generation Initiatives such as First Gen and Gen 1 mentoring programs. They also met with a recent alumnus who is now working as a professional at the college as well as a current senior from Nigeria. Both shared about their experiences as first generation students, work study opportunities, and the student life activities that enhanced their college experience. After a college-sponsored lunch, the students toured the college.
Morgan and Jeanna have both visited other colleges such as ABAC and Kennesaw State University. As REACH Scholars and rising seniors, they are well positioned to make an informed decision about where they want to go upon high school graduation.
Special thanks to District Partners in Education Zaxby’s for their Urgency to Serve grant and to Peach State Federal Credit Union for their support allowing students to participate in team building activities, academic enhancement, and college visits. Thank you also to all the corporate and private donors who support the REACH Georgia Scholarship fund. To date, BCSS has graduated two REACH Cohorts. They are freshmen, sophomores, and juniors at the University of North Georgia, Georgia Gwinnett College, Lanier Technical College, and Georgia State University. Graduates this year will be headed to UNG and GGC.
