In data released by the Georgia Department of Education today, Barrow County School System continues to beat the state average and see growth on Milestones tests.
Georgia Milestones assessments attempt to measure the degree that students have learned and mastered standards in tested subject areas. Milestones are taken towards the end of the school year and assess the full span of the grade level standards. Students are ranked in four different categories: beginning (1), developing (2), proficient (3), or distinguished (4). Students who have fully mastered the standards achieve at the proficient level and distinguished indicates moving beyond that level.
- End of Grade (EOG) assessments cover English/language arts and mathematics for students in grades 3 through 8, and science and social studies in grades 5 and 8. The results are used when determining if third, fifth and eighth grade students move on to the next grade.
- End of Course (EOC) assessments cover content at the high school level on eight core classes required for graduation, which includes 9th grade Literature, American Literature, Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology, Physical Science, U.S. History, and Economics.
Approximately 10,000 students in Barrow County School System took part in the Milestones testing last year, and about 13,885 tests were administered. The assessment was administered 100% online for the first time last spring (with the exception of students who require an accommodation).
"The district's intentional focus on high quality instruction is evident in the overall increases in the percentages of students scoring at and above the proficient level across grade levels and content areas,” shared Dr. Angela Moton, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. “We are proud of academic achievement and progress of students and the dedication, hard work and commitment of all Barrow County School System staff towards improving student learning. We will use these gains and successes to guide our future work and replicate the best practices to continually improve teaching and learning for all."
