Whenever a person falls behind and feels like giving up, they must dig deep down to find resilience, rely on the support of those around them, and work their way out of the challenges they face due to their decisions. Mauricio Dela Cruz, now a senior, began experiencing these challenges in 10th grade. After a fantastic freshman year, earning all his credits, he began digging a metaphorical hole: assignments were not turned in, deadlines passed without work being submitted, and he often slept in class. In the end, he gave up.
As each new deadline passed without schoolwork being turned in, Mauricio fell further behind. “I was slacking,” he recalls. Throughout 10th grade, he admits he did not take school seriously and purposely ignored any help people tried to provide. Despite efforts from teachers, graduation specialists, and academic interventionists, Mauricio kept his distance and struggled academically, ultimately failing multiple classes.
Entering his junior year, Mauricio’s family rallied around him, and difficult conversations were had. His mom was the driving force, encouraging him to push forward through his actions and not dwell on his poor choices from the year before. She challenged him to envision his future, define success for himself, and learn to be proud of everything he accomplishes. Mauricio realized that his definition of success in life was to earn a high school diploma and continue to learn beyond high school. He knew changes had to be made.
Reinvigorated by support from home and a changed mindset, Mauricio approached his classes and assignments with focus and determination. The teachers and academic interventionists, who had been there from the beginning, noticed the shift and continued their support, which became instrumental in his progress. He created new habits such as going to bed early, advocating for himself, and seeking guidance on what he needed to catch up on when he was absent or fell behind. These new habits, the change in mindset, and continued support led to another successful school year.
When asked what advice he would give to other students facing academic challenges, or even to his younger self, Mauricio said, “Don’t give up. I gave up on myself and pushed everyone away that was trying to help – friends, family, the school. I did my own thing and wasn’t focusing on what is important, my education. The good influences are in your life for a reason. Listen to those influences and never give up.” We are so proud that Mauricio “never gave up”! Today, Mauricio is an example to other students who may feel overwhelmed and have given up. His story is a testament that slight changes in habits and mindset can lead to incredible progress. His hard work and resilience paid off. He has clawed his way out of the hole he was in, and we are so happy that he is on track to be a 2025 BASA Blazer Graduate!
