We'd like to celebrate the impact our teachers and staff had on our district and community. Here are a few highlights from our retirees this year. Photos below.
Dan Woschitz taught for 32 years and the last 25 have been with BCSS. He's taught Business and Computer Sciences classes at WMS, AHS, and HMMS. He's also coached basketball, volleyball, and tennis (bringing home a regional championship in 2016). "I will miss the relationships and daily interaction with my dedicated colleagues and students. I love to run into ex-students out in the community and catch up with them as to what they are doing. I’ve been truly blessed to be a teacher and to be here in the Barrow County School System."
Dr. David Beeland has worked at BCSS for 8 years and for over 28 years in education. He started his career as a science teacher but has also served as an instructional coach and Instructional Technology Coordinator. Since 2009, Dr. Beeland has served as the Director of Federal Programs. "I will miss the opportunity to work with amazingly talented district and school leaders, instructional coaches, and teachers. We are truly Barrow Blessed with quality leaders and teachers who genuinely care about the future of students."
Connie Ellington worked in BCSS for 30 years as a kindergarten and pre-K teacher. During her tenure, she was recognized with numerous Teacher of the Year awards at CLES, YES, BES, ELC, and was selected as the Georgia Pre-K TOTY in 2016. "I will miss teaching the youngest learners. They have brought me so much joy, love, laughter, and fun for the past 30 years. Not spending my day with children will be the bitter part of this bittersweet time in my life. In a way, I have been able to experience the joy of childhood for the past 30 years."
Rita Brooksher has spent over 26 years with BCSS, and she was selected as Teacher of the Year in 2018. She's finishing her career teaching 2nd grade at Holsenbeck Elementary. "I will miss being so personally involved in the academic growth of students and relationships developed throughout the years with coworkers."
Vickie Ortego's career has been spent in healthcare and education. She's spent almost 18 years as a nurse in our schools serving AHS and HMMS primarily, but also supporting YES and BES. Prior to being a school nurse, she worked in hospitals, home health, hospice, physician's offices, and an emergency clinic. "I will miss the students and staff. I've seen many of our students grow through the years from elementary to middle to high school and even graduate like my own children and grandchildren. I've also gotten to know many of our staff and built treasured friendships, and consider them all, both students and staff, as my CHEE family."
Shawn Williams has devoted 20 of her 27 years in education to BCSS, working as a school administrator at AES, SES, and AIM. "I will miss my BOLD students, BOLD teachers, and BOLD colleagues. The people and the work we do to be BOLD have made me the best version of myself. Every day, we strive to take risks, explore possibilities, and achieve greatness. Wherever I go and whatever my steps are, I know I will carry this spirit of BOLDness with me."
