Parent Guide to School Safety

What is a school Emergency Operations Plan (SEOP)?

The School Emergency Operations Plan (SEOP) is an action/response plan addressing threats and hazards to the school and safety needs before, during, and after an incident—(OCGA 20-2-1185).

At the beginning of each school year, school administrators, along with the safety and security office, update the SEOP specific to the individual campus. To ensure safety for all students and staff, the specifics of the SEOP are NOT sharable and must remain confidential.

General Response Protocols:

Lockdown

Lockdowns are utilized to secure students/staff in the event of an internal/external threat.

Evacuation

Controlled evacuations happen when a hazard has been identified inside of the school.

Shelter in place

Shelter-in is utilized during environmental impacts and/or severe weather.

  • Video intercom system at main entrances
  • Visitor Management System with built-in sex offender registry check
  • Security Cameras—interior, exterior and classroom cameras
  • Each school performs 15 safety drill years per year (Fire, Lockdown, Severe Weather)
  • Emergency Preparedness Guides in all classrooms
  • School Resource Officers throughout the District
  • AEDs located in all schools
  • Staff training for emergency response and crisis management

How can you and student be prepared?

  • Keep your contact information and emergency contact information current to ensure timely notifications.
  • Keep all medical information up to date.
  • During an emergency, please do not call or come to the school. Instructions and updates will be provided via phone call, texts, email, and website.
  • Speak with your child about following directions of teachers and stress the importance of why we conduct school safety drills.
  • If you have specific concerns about your child’s safety, contact your school’s principal and/or the safety and security office.

Parent Reunification

In the event of an off-site evacuation, parent/guardian information will be communicated via phone calls, text, email, and website. In events where off-site reunification is required, it is imperative you provide identification to demonstrate you or your emergency contact is authorized to pick up your child. Remember, this is for your child’s protection and your peace of mind. Please be patient, this will be a lengthy process.
