Did you know that Barrow County homeowners who are 62 and older may qualify for a new age-based property tax exemption? The Barrow County Board of Education and state legislators approved the two new exemptions placed on the November 2024 ballot. Voters passed the exemptions which then took effect on January 1, 2025. Seniors have until April 1 to apply for this new exemption.
Here’s what that new exemption offers:
- If you are 62-69 years old and your earned income is up to $60,000 with Social Security and retirement income no more than $96,432, you may qualify for an exemption to cover a house value of $350,000.
- If you are age 70 or older and your earned income is up to $113,000 with Social Security and retirement income no more than $96,432, you may qualify for an unlimited exemption up to five acres.

Steps to apply:
- Visit the Barrow County Tax Assessor’s Office (30 N. Broad Street, Winder) before April 1, 2025.
- You will need to bring:
- 2024 Income Tax Return (If you don’t file income taxes, there will be an affidavit document for you to sign at the Assessor’s Office.)
- Driver's License or Photo ID
- Car Registration or Utility Bill
