Al Brown: March 2023 BOLD Difference Maker

Al Brown - March Community Member of the Month

Every day, members of our community are instrumental to the success and welfare of our students and staff. To show appreciation, Superintendent Dr. Chris McMichael started the Community Member of the Month to recognize these individuals who are making a BOLD difference behind-the-scenes.

We're happy to recognize Al Brown as the March Community Member of the Month. Mr. Brown is the Volunteer Food Pantry Manager for Barrow County Cooperative Benevolence Ministry Inc. His contributions to our community ensure students and their families have a place to turn to for support.

BCSS School and Community Relations Specialist Ellen Petree says, "In 2010, Mr. Brown helped lead the new Food Pantry-BCSS partnership program, Feeding Families. This monthly program supports BCSS families identified by social workers and counselors as being food insecure, and helps bridge the gap at home for them. He also runs the monthly Holly Hill Mobile Food Pantry that's distributes 30,000 lbs of food to Barrow families. He's a true champion for BCSS children and families through the local non-profit, Barrow County Cooperative Benevolence Ministry Inc., that hosts these and other programs supporting BCSS students and families. Mr. Brown is also a leader in his church at White Oak Springs Baptist Church. His volunteer work directly impacts BCSS students and families in helping provide food for those in need."

BCSS Social Worker Stephanie Byrd says, "Al Brown volunteers his time to help whomever he meets. I have been working with some projects with Al over the past ten years and he continues to go full stride. Al manages the Feeding a Family Program which gives BCSS’s student’s families forty to fifty pounds of food. While doing other food distributions, Al identify BCSS families who can benefit from Feeding a Family and the Mobile Food Pantry. Al was instrumental with donating school supplies to all the schools in BCSS district each month and with getting leggings for all the school nurses so students could remain at school if they had an accident or out of dress code. If I ask Al about how to assist with finding a need for a family in Barrow, he does not hesitate to support."

Westside Middle School Counselor Gary Wood says, "Mr. Brown impacts our students and families in numerous ways. This includes working with Feeding Families, providing emergency food services, offering community service learning opportunities, and being a positive mentor for everyone in our county. Mr. Brown is a humble man who participates in a variety of roles in service to everyone. He is always working to support people in in their times of need, and his service through the local Food Pantry directly impacts many of our families in Barrow County."

Thank you, Al, for the important difference you make for the students and families of Barrow County!
