Apalachee High School Names New Head Football Coach

After reviewing more than 50 applications, Apalachee High School is pleased to welcome Kevin Saunders as the next Head Football Coach starting with the 2025-2026 school year. The Board of Education approved the hire at their March 25 Work Session.

Coach Saunders has decades of coaching experience in football with proven success in helping to foster football programs. Some highlights include:

  • 191-113-2 Overall Head Coach Record
  • 2011 State Championship
  • Multiple State Playoff Appearances
  • Gilmer High School: Took 0-31 record to a 4-6 record his first year as head coach
  • Several Coach of the Year Recognitions

"We are very excited to welcome Coach Saunders to the Chee Nation. He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and ideas to the position, but he is also focused on continuing Apalachee traditions. This fall, I am confident he, his staff, and our team will be ringing that bell,” said AHS Principal Jessica Rehberg.

Coach Saunders said he’s honored and eager to get to work to help prepare the team for the upcoming season.  “This position means so much to me. I am so proud to be the coach at Apalachee. People tell me this is a tough job, but I believe this is a great opportunity to succeed. Excellence is a practice not a prize.”

“What drew me to Apalachee is the community, the school’s commitment to student-athletes, and the opportunity to work with a talented group of young players. I’m looking forward to getting to know the players and their families, and to helping the team reach its full potential. Together, we will work to create a football program that everyone can be proud of.”

Along with serving in the Head Football Coach role, Coach Saunders will also teach Physical Education.

The first official practice under Coach Saunders’ leadership will be shared with the team and families soon. Our community is invited to a meet and greet at AHS in the Auxiliary Gym at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 27.
