Creation looks different for everyone. Some individuals are good at making art, some are great at creating recipes or dances. For Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy senior Nikolas Dawson, his creations involve computer science.
He dreams of someday creating his very own video game for the world to play.
Playing video games was an outlet for Nikolas, he enjoyed the competition of the game. He would teach himself how to reprogram and repair his console.
That is how he found a passion and interest in programming.
Nikolas knew that he wanted to attend BASA (Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy) before it was finished being built. He understood the vision of the high school.
“I was in middle school when they were building BASA, I saw a good opportunity, so I took it,” said Nikolas. “How could I not accept something like that if I’m going into the computer science field.”
During his freshman year, he joined the school’s robotics team.
“It turned out that I really liked robotics and I liked working with a team,” said Nikolas.
Being part of a team and helping other members brought him great satisfaction. Being on the team helped him to realize that he wanted to grow in his leadership skills.
Computer Science Teacher, Laurie Noles, has played an influential role in Nikolas’ academic career. She taught him throughout his high school career for most of his computer science classes.
“Mrs. Noles has been my computer science teacher for the longest time, she is always there to help. She is always so ecstatic and happy when I figure out a solution to a problem I am struggling with,” said Nikolas.
“She builds teamwork within people. She is exactly what I strive to be one day, as an exemplary mentor like Mrs. Noles.”
Nikolas offers a piece of advice to others.
“Try your best, always be willing to learn. Most importantly, never give up on what you are doing, always follow your dreams,” said Nikolas.
Nikolas has been accepted into the University of Georgia and has been offered an internship with Lockheed Martin.
Congratulations, Nikolas! Barrow County School System is proud of your hard work inside and outside of the classroom.
