There are important upcoming changes to the Barrow County School System’s dual enrollment program.
What is not changing?
Students attending schools that are part of the Barrow County School System will continue to have the same access to a variety of college-level courses offered by colleges and universities. Dual enrollment will continue to allow eligible high school students to take approved college courses at little or no cost and allows students to earn both college and high school credit when they are successful in these courses.
What is changing?
Currently all approved dual enrollment courses receive 1.10 weighting. Beginning on June 1, 2023, only approved dual enrollment courses taken during a student's regular school schedule will be weighted. Additional courses taken outside of the regular schedule (e.g., during summer, more than 4 courses) will not be weighted, but will still count as both high school and college credits.
There will also be changes to the way that college letter grades are converted to number grades for students’ high school transcripts. Conversion scales are only used if a letter grade (not a number grade) is reported by the college or university.
The current grade conversion scale for dual enrollment courses receiving only letter grades (before weighting) is:
A = 100
B = 89
C= 79
D=69
F=55
Beginning on June 1, 2023, the following conversion scale for dual enrollment courses receiving only letter grades (before weighting) will be:
A= 95
B=85
C=75
D=65
F=55
Why are these changes being made?
The changes taking effect on June 1, 2023, bring the Barrow County School System’s dual enrollment program more in-line with surrounding districts and with the Advanced Placement opportunities students have in the BCSS.
When do the changes take effect?
Any dual enrollment class taken after June 1, 2023, will be subject to the changes described above.
