On Saturday, December 17th, nineteen robotics teams from across northeast Georgia converged on the Center for Innovative Teaching to compete in the Winder-Barrow Regional FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Tournament.
Among these nineteen teams of 4th through 8th graders were three teams comprised of students from all five BCSS middle schools: Bear Creek, Haymon-Morris, Russell, Westside, and the Arts & Innovation Magnet.
Throughout the FLL SUPERPOWERED season, teams of students have been focusing on innovative solutions to specific problems related to their personal "energy journey." These energy journeys bring particular attention to how the energy we use everyday is generated, stored, distributed, and consumed. To do this, teams built a dozen specific LEGO Robotics mission models representing various aspects of an energy journey, including a windmill, a hydroelectric dam, an oil rig, a factory, power station, and a hybrid filling station. They then built and programmed their own LEGO robot to autonomously interact with these models to score maximum points within a 2 minute and 30 second time period.
When not engaged in their five matches at the robot tables in the gym, teams presented to a panel of judges about the development of their Innovation Project, the engineering process of their Robot Design, and the growth of their FIRST Core Values throughout the season with special attention to Gracious Professionalism.
After a long (but very fun) day of competition and coopertition, awards and trophies were awarded to the following teams:
Innovation Project Awards:
- #58254 Panther Lego League
- #3085 Cloverbot Archers
Robot Design Awards:
- #48816 Cloverbot Bulldoggs
- #56542 Cloverbot Wildcats
Core Value Awards:
- #56931 RoboBraves
- #56558 Turner Titans
Robot Performance Awards:
- #53455 Energizers
- #56495 High Blocks
Champion Awards:
- #56495 High Blocks
- #58052 South Jackson Elementary
Congratulations to all three Barrow Robotics Program FLL Teams for winning top honors in at least one category at the regional level of competition. On top of that, Georgia Tech has just announced that all three CloverBots teams have advanced to the SuperRegional Tournament at Trickum Middle School on January 28th. Just one step away from the Georgia FLL State Championship in February!
The AIM Cloverbot Archers with their Innovation Project trophy.
The Winder-Barrow cluster Cloverbot Bulldoggs with their Robot Design trophy.
The Apalachee Cluster Cloverbot Wildcats with their Robot Design trophy.
The Winder-Barrow Regional FLL Tournament was only possible through the amazing partnership that exists between the Barrow County 4-H Office and the Barrow County School System. Together with many adult volunteers and high school members of the Barrow Robotics Program FTC Teams, the event was a great success.
