CLES Art Class Studies Wayne Thiebaud

Our CLES art teacher, Kathy Walters, instructed her students on the unique art of WayneThiebaud. Inspired by Thiebaud, the students created art using cardboard, plaster and paint,

Wayne Theibaud was American painter known for painting pictures of cakes and pies, pastries, ice cream cones and hot dogs – as well as his landscapes and portraits.

He passed away on Christmas Day 2021 at the age of 101. He did his last public interview at age 100 while working on a series of etching.

He served in World War II under commanding officer Ronald Reagan. After returning from the war he worked in a diner for many years and was inspired by the dessert case with the beautiful pastries, cakes and pies.

Most of his adult life he was a Professor of painting at the University of Sacramento. He said his greatest joy was helping other artists achieve their artistic goals.

Quotes:  “When you stare at an object, as you do when you paint, there is no point at which you stop learning things from it.”

“Discipline is not a restriction but an aid to freedom.”
