ACADEMIC COURSES
In partnership with Lanier Technical College, Sims Academy students are able to get a jumpstart on their college career by registering for dual enrollment academic classes to satisfy both high school and college graduation requirements. These courses transfer to a number of public colleges, technical colleges, and universities across the state to satisfy core graduation requirements. Find a list of participating colleges HERE. Currently, dual enrollment opportunities are available to Sims Academy students in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Speech Communication.
In addition to all the benefits of dual enrollment, students who take their Lanier Tech courses through Sims Academy also receive:
- Additional academic support that includes tutoring, career guidance, and personalized planning to meet college and career goals
- More class time with instructors in introductory classes
- Classes with high school-aged peers
- College classes are offered in line with the BCSS calendar and bell schedule
- Supplemental learning opportunities to develop good study habits, professional skills, and connect with guest speakers from industry
- Access to laptops and other technology needed for classes and study as needed
AVAILABLE COURSES
The following Lanier Tech academic courses will be taught at Sims Academy for the 2020-2021 school year. Please note, although these courses satisfy the high school graduation requirements, dual enrollment courses can also be taken on an elective basis for students who have already satisfied a particular requirement. For example, students can enroll in ENGL 2130 American Literature even if they have already taken the high school American Literature class; in this case, the college class would count as one of the student's academic electives.

DUAL ENROLLMENT PLANNING
Students are able to take up to 30 hours of college credit through the dual enrollment program. This could result in them entering college as a sophomore. Students and families will work with Sims Academy staff and their high school counselor to develop a course plan that aligns with their long-term goals for college and career. To aid with this planning, two sample schedules are available at this link.
