Barrow County Schools Sets New Record For High School Graduation Rate
[Winder, Georgia, Sept 19, 2018] – Barrow’s high school graduation rate has reached an all-time high of 86.1% for 2018. The Barrow County Class of 2018 boasted the highest graduation rate of any class in BCSS history since graduation rates have been measured statewide (starting in 2000).
Today, the Georgia Department of Education released the statewide high school graduation rates for the class of 2018. Georgia has continued to see an increase in the statewide 4-year cohort graduate rate of 81.6% in 2018, up from 80.6% in 2017. In Georgia, graduation rates are measured by the “cohort” method. Cohort methods measure what percentage of students at a school graduate within four years of entering high school.
For the 6th year in a row, Barrow County is above the statewide average posting a graduation rate of 86.1% in 2018. The graduation rate continues to rise as we increase student engagement with Career pathways, dual enrollment, AP programs, student advisement and work-based learning internship opportunities.
Georgia’s 4-year cohort: 81.6%
Barrow School System: 86.1%
Apalachee High School : 89.1%
Winder-Barrow High School: 83.9%
“I am proud of the work our students and teachers are focused on at Apalachee High School. There is no single answer when growth occurs with graduation rate. It takes a community getting behind a school for success to breed,” AHS principal Jennifer Martin said. “Learning is about growth allowing for content mastery to vary depending on individual needs.”
Barrow County Schools are also utilizing data more effectively to identify students’ individual learning needs at all grade levels and supporting the student in a safe environment. The district has developed mechanisms to track students throughout their four years of high school, which enables schools to provide increased support earlier for at-risk students.
“I am very proud of all our teachers, staff members, students, and parents for the dedication and hard work that goes into supporting our charges in crossing the finish line of high school graduation!” shared Superintendent Dr. Chris McMichael. “The steady and sustainable growth trend that the Barrow County School System is seeing in our graduation rates is an extremely positive measure and underscores the amazing teaching and learning that is going on in our schools at all levels.”
