Four Middle School Students REACH Toward Their College Dreams
[Winder, Georgia, Sept 5, 2018] – Dreams of attending college and pursuing a career became a reality for four Barrow County eighth grade students when they were selected as the 2018-2019 REACH Scholars for the Barrow County School System.
They will be joining a very exclusive group of students across the state who are striving to maintain their grades in order to graduate high school and college prepared for a career. This is the fourth group of scholars to be chosen in Barrow County.
REACH Georgia is a key tenet in the state’s Complete College initiative. Scholars are paired with a mentor and an academic coach through high school. They must maintain good behavior, grades and attendance, and graduate from high school. Scholars who successfully complete the program are awarded a $10,000 scholarship that can be used at any HOPE eligible college in Georgia. Many colleges are matching or double-matching these funds. The scholarship is awarded in addition to any other grant or scholarship the student receives.
Receiving a nomination to be a REACH Scholar is a great accomplishment in itself as there were only twelve nominees from the four Barrow County middle schools. The students were interviewed by members of our business community earlier this month before the final selection was announced.
The BCSS REACH Scholars for 2018-2019 are:
• Jeanna Presley from Bear Creek Middle School,
• Dylan Ceraso from Haymon-Morris Middle School,
• Morgan Watkins from Russel Middle School, and
• Alex Tovar-Villagomez from Westside Middle School.
Each student was surprised by Dr. Chris McMichael, Superintendent, Mrs. Sherri Perry, BCSS REACH Coordinator, Assistant Superintendents Dr. Angela Moton, Dr. Ken Greene and Joe Perno, the middle school principals, assistant principals and counselors when the good news caravan traveled to each middle school today. There were surprised smiles, happy tears, cheering, hugs, and high fives, but the most joyous remarks were heard when the students surprised their parents with a phone call to share the good news!
Preparations are now being made for the official REACH Georgia Statewide Signing Day at the Professional Development Center on October 24. REACH Scholars in school systems across Georgia will sign contracts during the month, committing to satisfying the program requirements and to graduating from high school.
